Al Roker, the weather forecaster from the TODAY show and Sam Champion, the weatherman, from the Good Morning America show are able to track the weather patterns via meteorological technology, however, only the creator of the heavens and the earth can control the weather.
We are experiencing extreme weather conditions throughout our country and around the world. Monster storms in the USA from New Mexico to Maine, record breaking snow falls, category 5 hurricanes, tsunamis, flooding…. ‘Some’ snow is fun for sledding, making snowmen and school cancellations, however, severe weather can also wreak havoc, i.e., car accidents, rooftops collapsing, and downed power lines. Furthermore, being caught or stuck in the middle of a storm can be very frightful.
Even two thousand years ago when Jesus and His disciples were in a boat out at sea, a sudden storm swirled around them and they were in great danger…and very afraid. They were screaming and panicking and cried out to Jesus—who was peacefully asleep—‘we are going to drown’! Upon hearing their cries--Jesus awoke… and rebuked the wind and the raging waters…and the storm subsided and all was calm.*
They asked then, as we ask today, ‘Who is this…who commands even the winds and the water and they obey Him?’ ‘Who is this?’….He is God, the creator of the heavens and the earth and all that is within them. He is the one that controls the weather. He rules over the raging sea and when its waves mount up, He stills them.** He calms the storms. Not just the storms going on around the world but also the storms going on in our lives.
We need to only do what the disciples did when they felt like they were going to drown—they cried out to God. And he heard. And he calmed the storm….and their pounding hearts.
When we feel like circumstances in our lives hit us like a tsunami and that the situations we are experiencing are going to drown us…we only need to cry out to God and He will calm the storms in life…in our lives.
Just like when the disciple, Peter, upon seeing Jesus walking on the lake, got out of the boat and began to walk towards Jesus. His footing was steady—until—he took his eyes off of Jesus and became distracted and unnerved by the circumstances of the waves slapping at his legs—and he thus began to sink in the water. Yet, although, he took his eyes (his focus) off of Jesus…he re-focused his eyes (and heart) away from the circumstances and back to the One who controls the weather and cried out to Him, ‘Lord, save me.’***
We will have storms in life. Our daily personal weather forecast is not always ‘sunny’. There will be days, even seasons, of cloudiness, hail, snow storms, torrential rains, crashing waves and our own personal tsunamis. However, we can/should also cry out to the Weatherman….and He will calm our storms and bring a peace to our hearts and minds, despite the forecast.
