Who’s behind the wheel?

On a recent Sunday, a little girl was being baptized at our church.
When the Pastor asked her why she wanted to be baptized with childlike faith she responded, 'I want Jesus to be in charge of my life'.

Now I have witnessed many baptisms. The sprinkling of water on babies and also the emersion of the whole body (older children and adults) under water in representation of the dying of self and desire to live for God. Baptisms are also a reminder for the one being baptized that '...if any man be in Christ he is a new creation, old things have passed away, behold all things are new'*

Yet the words of this particular little girl struck me. Her words made me ponder...
I was reminded of the title of Carrie Underwood's song, 'Jesus, take the wheel'.

That is really what it's all about, isn't it?
The little girl, you and me~giving over the steering wheel of our lives to Jesus?
I envied that little girl in that she is so young yet she spoke so wisely.
'Out of the mouth of babes' ~(I’m just sayin’)

I was older—seventeen-- when I asked Jesus to take over the wheel of my heart and steer my life according to His purposes.
OK now we all are back seat drivers from time to time especially when we think the driver has taken a wrong turn or is going too slow. I have done my share of that...and have ended up in ditches. Or my wheels spinning—spewing mud every which way, making a an epic mess.

Why? Because I grabbed the wheel back and decided I wanted to go a different direction. Or I wanted to go a faster speed. Or I chose not to obey ‘STOP signs’ or heed the ‘Slow Down’ warnings or brake for ‘Icy Conditions Ahead’ and even ignored the ‘Dead End’, ‘Turn Back’ sign posts.

God has had to rescue me and steer me back on His path, marked ‘One Way’ only.

One of my daughters has had AAA inform her that she has used their service so many times-- that they will no longer come to her aid.

However, no matter how many times we leave our keys in a locked car, go off the path, get stuck in ditches, blow our tires, cause fender benders, or blow the transmission of our faith….God will continually, unconditionally, always come to our aid- 24/7.

All we need to do--like the little girl—is to yield our hearts— and ask Jesus to take the wheel!

Wendy’s Witz-dom: Yield now before you come to the end of the road.

God’s Wisdom: Jesus answered, ‘I am the way…’ (John 14:6)
